Liners in control cables are necessary to reduce friction between the cable and the conduit, even when grease is used. The liner design has a strong impact on the life expectancy, the friction, and on the global cost of the control cable. Furthermore, they are exposed to strong conditions: well-known constraints are resistance to chemicals, high temperature or temperature variations.
Such liners can be found in a wide range of applications. Especially in automotive, lots of actuators are based on control cables, aka push-pull cable.

For example, shifter cables mainly rely on heavy duty cable: they offer low friction along with high life expectancy, so that the driver doesn’t «feel» the cable, but also for speed and efficiency of the shifter.
Light duty liners can be found in less demanding applications, that still require low friction and efficiency.
