The Servo Accelerometers from the Sherborned Sensors A200 range are utilized to measure vector acceleration. They achieve this with exceptional accuracy using a force balance torque mechanism in a closed loop. The torque developed by a pendulous mass depends on the product of the applied acceleration and its mass unbalance. A position sensor is used to detect the motion of the mass, and its output signal is connected to a servo amplifier. The current that results from this passes through the torque motor, resulting in a torque which is equal but directly opposite to the initial torque.

The mass now remains still in a new position which is fractionally different from its initial zero g position. At the same time, the current to the torque motor is passed through a stable resistor resulting in an output voltage which reflects the applied acceleration. A phase advancing network inside the servo amplifier leads to electronic damping in the system.
